Description
Captain Paasch was born in about 1835 and went to sea in a Baltic coasting smack at the age of ten. Five years later he joined the German Navy and then entered the Danish Navy. It was not long before he was serving in German, Dutch and American merchant ships before gaining command in 1862 of a Russian ship trading to the East.
Paasch published a work of himself, namely the Illustrated Marine Encyclopedia 1890. What makes the work unusual is that it was really the first attempt to illustrate and describe in English every part of a ship, both with text and with clearly keyed diagrams.
